Fun on Friday: Cool Gold

How would you like to eat some cool gold?

Read closely. I didn’t say buy gold. That’s probably would you would expect on the SchiffGold webpage.

But I said eat gold. Because, you know, that is a thing.

I’ve written about eating gold here before. I’ve told you about gold-covered steaks, gold-encrusted chicken wings, and even gold coffee. So, how about dessert? Specifically, gold ice cream.

A shop in Cincinnati, Ohio, is selling an ice cream cone topped with 23-karat gold. This brings a whole new meaning to making gold “cool.”

Andy and Kait Grear, along with Rhett and Jenny Harkins opened The Bold Face Dairy Bar Company in 2018. They sell “whippy dip” style ice cream out of a walkup window. It’s not exactly the place you would expect to buy gold. But the Bold Face Cone comes garnished with gold leaf.

Now, I don’t really care much about eating gold. But the rest of the recipe sounds delish. It features caramel sauce, ice cream, chocolate sauce, chocolate sprinkles, mini chocolate chips.

The gold-garnished cone will set you back $12. That’s a bit pricy for an ice cream cone if you ask me. But hey – it has gold on it. And this reaffirms something I’ve said here before  – gold makes things more valuable. I mean, you couldn’t sell an ice cream cone garnished with aluminum for $12. (The thought just set my teeth on edge.) Or imagine a cone topped with wood shavings. I’m pretty sure you couldn’t give that away. But put gold on something and the value goes up.

You know why?

People want gold.

Now, I have to confess, I don’t really want gold on my food. I have no desire to poop gold. Here’s the thing, though – if somebody can get other people to fork out good money to eat gold, more power to them. I love capitalism. Convincing people to part with hard-earned cash to eat gold definitely qualifies as peak capitalism. And if eating gold appeals to you  – you be you!

Thinking bigger picture, this reinforces an important truth: gold has utility. Every once in awhile, you’ll hear somebody call gold “a useless metal.” This is just dumb. There are all kinds of uses for gold. Heck, it may be one of the most useful metals on the planet. Garnishing food is one of the sillier uses, to be honest. But gold is increasingly being used in some key technology sectors, particularly in medicine, aerospace and electronics.

And of course, gold is money. It did not become money because it wasn’t useful for anything else. Its role as money actually evolved because it is so valuable and has so many uses.

So, you can go to Cincinnati and get gold on your ice cream cone. Or you can just call us at 1-888-GOLD-160 and buy some gold to preserve your wealth. Either decision will be golden. (Yes. I had to go there.)
