As the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak continues to snarl global supply chains, the following chart from HowMuch.net shows which categories of goods the US imports and exports the most.

After the broad categories of machinery and electric machinery, the largest category of US imports is mineral fuels (oil, refined products, etc…). While the US remains a large energy importer, it has become a large energy producer in its own right. Indeed, US is now considered a net energy exporter when accounting for all the various fuel and natural gas products.

The US also imports a large portion of its pharmaceuticals and intermediate pharmaceutical ingredients, with a large portion coming from China. HowMuch notes that “97% of US antibiotic are imported from China” as well as 95% of ibuprofen.

With regards to the top US exports, other than machinery and fuels, the US is dependent on large aircraft exports. Unfortunately, air travel is perhaps the single industry that has been most impacted by the Corornavirus outbreak. The U.S. aircraft market has already lost about $175 billion in market value in just the last month.
