VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 26, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Trevali Mining Corporation (“Trevali” or the “Company”) (TSX: TV, BVL: TV; OTCQX: TREVF, Frankfurt: 4TI) regretfully announces that 19 workers at the Santander mine in Peru tested positive for COVID-19. These workers are asymptomatic and have been provided with safe and preventative quarantine. The Company has temporarily suspended operations at the mine and mill to undertake additional testing on site.
On June 23rd, prior to a roster change, 69 workers were screened with COVID-19 serological rapid tests of which 19 yielded positive results. These tests detect the presence of antibodies that have been produced in response to a COVID-19 infection. In response, all workers on site are proactively being quarantined and will be tested using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. This is the most common diagnostic test used to identify people currently infected. Additional medical professionals are being brought to the operation to provide support and to perform the testing and diagnosis. Checks on existing controls, such as physical distancing, body temperature readings, cleaning and disinfection will occur as part of the investigation. New transport options and protocols between the operation and the main areas where our workers live will also be agreed and implemented before a re-start occurs.
The Company has decided to temporarily suspend mining and milling operations to focus on the health and safety of Santander’s workforce. No timeline for the restart of operations has been defined at this time. Trevali continues to engage with the Government of Peru, local communities, and other mining companies to refine best practices in the screening and prevention of COVID-19.
